Tess Of The D’Urbervilles tells of (surprisingly) Tess Durbeyfield, the daughter of a poor and dissipated villager, who learns that she may be descended from the ancient family of D‘Urbervilles. In her search for respectability her fortunes fluctuate wildly, and the story assumes the proportions of a Greek tragedy. It explores Tess's relationships with two very different men, her struggle against the social mores of the rural Victorian world which she inhabits and the hypocrisy of the age.

A classic for many reasons, the romance, the intrigue and the superb writing of Thomas Hardy, Tess has a place in many people’s bookshelves! This particular edition is a deep purple clothbound hardback in a slipcase, published by the Folio Society. This is an eleventh printing completed in 1997 and includes an introduction by Elspeth Sandys and illustrations by Peter Reddick.

The illustrations are wood engraving, something which Peter Reddick was famously known for and completed many titles for Folio and Penguin.

Overall this book is in excellent condition with no major marks or splits to the slipcase, the pages have no foxing and no owners marks throughout. The only sign of use is some slight marks to the title on the spine.
