The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain is a classic of American literature, along with Huckleberry Finn, Mark Twains words have resonated throughout the years. This particular edition was produced by Chatto & Windus in 1897 and includes 110 illustrations by True Williams. These illustrations vary from near full page to index size to small marginalia, each however in a beautiful hand drawn style.
The book itself is clothbound in a dark navy blue with gilt lettering to the cover and spine, however the cover has seen some damage. In particular the spine has received the most damage, to the top it is slightly separated as shown in the photos. To the interior there is an inscription ‘Allen Chandler Jr from Uncle Hewellyen Nov 12 1899’ and an embossing stated ‘WH Smith & Son London’. The pages show foxing throughout however a publishers magazine is included at the back of the book. Incredible that considering the age, everything that is original is present, even if damaged!
