A pale grey stoneware tokkuri or sake bottle with hand painted Kanji script denoting this particular bottle for dashi. Likely to have been used for Dashi-Wari a type of warm sake mixed with the broth stock of dashi to create a better umami rich flavour.
These stoneware bottles were very popular in the Edo and Meji periods in Japan, using a concept we still use today as they were refillable! You popped down to your local shop to refill the flasks as needed. Each flask would denote the contents and likely brand if there was one, to make sure the contents remained the same and did not affect future flavour.
This particular bottle has survived the ages in very good condition with no chips or visible cracks and measures at approximately 24cm high. It has a good weight to it, making it unlikely to tip over and the glossy ceramic glaze makes it reflect light beautifully.
Whilst we do not suggest using this bottle for sake in the future, we do believe that the beauty, history and craftsmanship on display will make a beautiful addition to your home!
