A pale grey stoneware tokkuri or sake bottle with hand painted Kanji script across both sides. These stoneware bottles were very popular in the Edo and Meji periods in Japan, using a concept we still use today as they were refillable! You popped down to your local shop to refill the flasks as needed. Each flask would denote the contents and likely brand if there was one, to make sure the contents remained the same and did not affect future flavour.
This particular bottle has sadly been in a bottle (possibly dropped when someone decided to start drinking early!) and has been cracked and repaired as shown in the photos. It measures at approximately 23cm high. It has a good weight to it, making it unlikely to tip over and the glossy ceramic glaze makes it reflect light beautifully.
Whilst we do not suggest using this bottle for sake in the future, we do believe that the beauty, history and craftsmanship on display will make a beautiful addition to your home!
