Dwarf ale glasses were originally created to sip the much more strong ale than in modern times, in smaller glass than the traditional flutes, and a nifty way for glassmakers to avoid glass tax. As glass was taxed due to weight, these smaller glasses were a more affordable way to enjoy the tipple of the time!
This pair of beautifully engraved glasses, handblown, dating to the Georgian period. Each glass has a hop plant to one side with crossed barley to the other in a funnel shape with a pontil mark to each base. Identifying their use in a delicate way, showing handcrafting mastery at its best.
They measure at approximately 13cm in height and 5.5cm in diameter at the top. Overall they are in excellent condition for their age with no chips or cracks present. One glass does however have a grouping of small black marks on one side and to the base as shown in the photos.
