A superb specimen of French made majolica from Sarreguemines pottery in a crouched frog shape to form a water pitcher. In a deep amber glaze, with the Sarreguemines pottery mark to the base, this exceptionally rare piece of pottery pours water from its mouth, whilst brightening a space when not in use!
Sarreguemines pottery has a fascinating history, first formed in 1790 as a family business, it wasn’t until 1800 that things began to pick up! Napoleon became one of their customers along with a large tile order for the original metro in Paris. Known for their colours, majolica methods and unique designs they became extremely well known very quickly (for the age!).
The pitcher is in good condition for its age with no chips or cracks and minimal crazing to the glaze as shown. It measures at approximately 17cm high and 18cm in width including the handle.
