This suitably formally dressed pair are poised and ready to play the koto and a brilliant example of omiyage kokeshi dolls. Kokeshi have a very long and developed history, initially created during in the mountainous areas of northern Japan, during winter when we all have to admit we have more free time on our hands at home. People started to carve this little toy dolls which ended being sold to tourists visiting the hot springs in the summer.
The sign behind this pair shows links to Saitou Kichi or more commonly known as Okichi. A 17 year old woman resident of Shimoda who was forced to work as a maidservant of Townsend Harris, the first American Consul when he arrived on the “black ships” as depicted. The story became the inspiration for the story of The Barbarian And The Geisha starring John Wayne.
Much as this is a dark tale, the dolls themselves are beautifully painted and have real character. They are in good condition with strings of the koto intact and no major marks or signs of wear, measuring at approximately 6.5cm high and 14cm wide at the base.
