A beautiful example of a ujo-bori, a specific type of lacquerware created in the Okayama prefecture of Japan. This small serving tray features a persimmon design to the centre, with the wood highlighted brilliantly by the lacquer.
To the back is a circular design, known as sen-dan-bori, which serves two purposes. Firstly it highlights the contrast of colour within the tray whilst secondly acting as a grip for the trap to remain stationary on a table.
Everything about this piece is a celebration of craftsmanship and care to detail. Measuring at approximately 21cm in diameter, it is in excellent condition with no major marks or scratches that are visible. There is a makers mark to the back of the letter ‘K’, I suspect this dates the tray to early mid century however cannot find any further details.
Whilst this is a beautiful and no doubt functional tray, it would also be stunning as a piece of wall art, adding some natural texture to your room!
